FACTBOX – Massive storm Sandy blamed for 64 deaths

Sandy, the massive story that tore through the U.S. East Coast is being blamed, so far, for the deaths of 64 people, many of whom were killed by falling trees or branches.

The storm, at one point extending 1,000 miles (1,609 km) in diameter, is making its way north over inland New York, Pennsylvania and into Canada. It knocked out power for millions and crippled transportation systems along the densely populated coastal region...Reporting by Andhrareporter

Sandy leaves US limping, 33 dead, 7.5 mn without power

 

Slamming into New York and New Jersey overnight, Hurricane Sandy Tuesday left a vast trail of destruction killing at least 33 people and leaving about 7.5 million people without power on the US East Coast.

Even as it was downgraded to a storm, Sandy knocked power out of a large swath of Manhattan in the financial district of New York, a city that never sleeps, according to various media reports.

Streets were littered with debris and buildings damaged. Seven subway tunnels under the East River were flooded. While several bridges over the East River were set to reopen, other mass transit service, including commuter rails, was still suspended.
